One of the major screw ups of Bush the 2nd... has been in not either subsidizing the opium growth in Afghanistan, so that we can use it to buy much needed narcotics...or in just razing the fields so that the crops are useless (which would be detrimental to Afghanistan). But we have to make a choice. We either do something that benefits us...or make the choice to screw them at the price of keeping ourselves afloat. We can't have the Afghanis selling the bad stuff while being our "protectorate", and stabbing us in the back.
